Part 3: The Wine Alchemy Biodynamic Directory©®™ – Tenth Anniversary Edition

Who are the BD producers and where are they? Now in its 10th year, the Directory now lists hundreds of BD producers and their websites, organised by country and region.

You’ll see that France is the heartland, but BD continues to expand in most wine producing countries. When I started this list in 2001, BD producers were few and largely confined to France and California, but everywhere the momentum continues to grow.

This Directory is a downloadable pdf, its purpose is to help those in the BD producer community and to help spread the word about Biodynamics.

Biodynamics is a broad church so I also attempt to indicate BD credentials. This is straightforward where producers are certified, e.g. by Biodyvin or Demeter, as their membership is a matter of public record, and while certification is an annual event few producers fail it or abandon it (in ten years I can think of a mere handful). It is of course more difficult to establish status with those producers that are not certified, don’t like to be pigeonholed or don’t employ all the practices. I’ve been fortunate to visit many BD producers, but inevitably I also need to rely on information given to me by others.

As with any Directory, this listing cannot be definitive. The Directory has been updated to add new BD producers and update existing producer information. Sadly, though perhaps inevitably, some of those originally listed have not stayed the distance. I am also aware of the perils of greenwashing and I have removed entries that are clearly not BD – using the word biodynamic on a website or in a merchant catalogue hardly constitutes proof!

After ten years and finding hundreds of producers the Directory is now such a size that I can no longer keep up with all the new additions and changes. Indeed, during this time BD is no longer viewed solely as the voodoo practice of a handful of cranks. Instead, it is firmly established and accepted by many in the wine industry and the influence of Rudolph Steiner’s ideas continues to grow. While the absolute numbers of producers and vineyard area is still tiny, there is now a critical mass - so in some respects the aim of helping to spread the word is done.

During this time I am particularly grateful to René Piamonte and Martin Abenel for South America, Max Allen for Australia, Francis Boulard for France, Sebastiano Cossia Castiglione for Italy, the Fetzer family for North America, Blair Walter and James Millton for New Zealand. There have been many more contributors from the BD community – thank you all!
